The large-scale shopping centre created the family-friendly entertainment space as part of a project to enhance its food court and entertainment zones. A completely new wing was added to the shopping centre so that they could upgrade the existing Mr Funtubbles by moving into this larger space.
A floor finish was required for the project that would fill the venue with light, colour and shapes to reflect Mr Funtubbles’ happy and bright image and create an enjoyable space.
The floor would have to maintain its visual impact despite the scuffs, scrapes and stains that lots of running, playing children would inflict on the floor. The spaces that required flooring included the main rides and attractions area, a private party zone as well as a more understated coffee shop for the parents to relax in.
To achieve this, 1,349 m2 of Flowcrete Africa’s specialist epoxy flooring solutions were supplied. 1,185 m2 of the hard-wearing, self-smoothing epoxy system Flowshield SL was applied around the carousel in a range of colours including Sky Blue (345 m2), Mid Grey (270 m2), Light Grey (300 m2) and Slate Grey (270 m2). The clear polyurethane coating Super Satin (Matt) was used to seal this part of the floor.
180 m2 of Peran SL Fruity in Grapefruit played a “starring” role in the new Mr Funtubbles, as it was used to create multiple large yellow stars. A glitter additive was added into the stars and these parts of the finish were sealed with Peran STB Clear Sealcoat.
Mr Funtubbles was so impressed by Flowcrete Africa’s flooring solutions that the same specification was used at Johannesburg’s The Glen Shopping Centre, where 1,036 m2 of Flowshield SL and Peran SL Fruity was applied. A similar project is also in the pipeline in the Cape Town area.
