Fresh Floor Finish for New Look Commercial Bakery

Playing its part in a major refurbishment project, Flowcrete South Africa delivered a fresh flooring solution for Albany Bakeries at the company's production facility in Pietermaritzburg.
The company, which forms part of the larger food, grocery and home care specialist - Tiger Brands, is one of South Africa's largest manufacturers of bread and other baked goods, with 13 regional production sites supplying direct to supermarkets across the country.
Maintaining production efficiency in a hygienic environment was of paramount importance to Albany Bakeries, yet the existing stained concrete floor saw significant damage resulting from movement in the substrate, and proved extremely difficult to clean and maintain.
As a result of the problems faced with the existing floor finish throughout the facility, as well as fire damage in one area of the plant, the entire 3,000 square metre site required a complete renovation to all interiors - including the floor space.
Looking not only to achieve a seamless, non-slip finish, Albany Bakeries required a flooring product that would positively help its cleaning regime; a steam-cleanable, heavy-duty material that would improve cleaning processes and minimise downtime associated with maintenance. A hygiene profile boosted by the inclusion of an antimicrobial agent within the polyurethane resin would also improve hygiene in the food production plant.
After having approached Flowcrete South Africa - a market leading manufacturer of high quality resin floor and wall coating systems - Albany Bakeries selected a seamless polyurethane resin system, Flowfresh SR, in an eye-catching yellow ochre colour.
The system, which offers complete protection against a wide range of bacteria, including SARS, E-coli, MRSA, C.difficile and Salmonella typhi amongst others, has been proven to deliver a 99.9% reduction in the bacterial population of a typical floor. Its unique silver-ion additive is homogeneously distributed throughout the resin matrix, killing bacteria on contact. The agent delivers sustained protection, remaining active for the lifetime of the floor, even if worn or damaged.
