Historic Winery Combines Vintage Image with Modern Materials

08 Mar 2018

  • Constantia Uitsig Wine Estate specified a selection of ultra-hygienic floors for its Cape Town site.
  • Flowfresh floors were applied in the estate's new winery as well as in its "Heritage Market" cottages.
  • The new floors had to provide modern functionalities while retaining the estate's historic identity.

Flowcrete South Africa has worked alongside the long-standing Constantia Uitsig Wine Estate to provide flooring solutions for a brand-new winery and for the refurbishment of its artisanal craft cottages.

The estate in Cape Town has been producing high quality wine since 1685 and so it was critical that the development work complemented the heritage and aesthetic of the location - bringing the functionality of the venue up to date without compromising on its history.

For the new winery facility, Constantia Uitsig Wine Estate wanted to combine its time-tested produce with the latest food production materials to ensure that its renowned vintage is safe guarded for the future.

This meant that the floor in its facility would have to be up to the challenge of withstanding conditions within a modern winery, which will expose the finish to spillages of wine and corrosive production by-products, impacts, point loading from pallets and heavy equipment, wear and tear from wheeled equipment and thermal shock from hot water wash downs.

To create a floor that was up to the task, Flowcrete South Africa supplied 1,076 m2 of the antibacterial, polyurethane resin floor system Flowfresh RT in Cream for the main processing areas. This solution was ideal, as its thick, robust nature meant that it would provide a seamless, slip resistant and operational surface for the long term.

As the Flowfresh range is HACCP International certified, the winery could rest assured that the floor had proven its ability to maintain a hygienic, food safe finish. Every Flowfresh system also includes the antibacterial additive Polygiene®, to deliver a coating that actively inhibits bacterial growth between wash cycles. Minimising contaminant build up is vital within a winery, as it avoids unwanted substances and microbes infiltrating the produce.

Constantia Uitsig Wine Estate’s owners also required floors for the back-room areas that would be in keeping with the venue’s image. To achieve this, Flowcrete South Africa was tasked with colour matching the floor to a brick taken from the very site, which was a first for the resin flooring specialist! This led to Flowcrete South Africa supplying 150 m2 of its hard wearing Flowfresh MF system in a bespoke Terracotta colour for the employees’ kitchen, changing rooms and toilet facilities.

Away from the new winery, the estate also refurbished a row of cottages that are home to various small food producers as well as a coffee shop and restaurant. Now called “The Heritage Market”, Flowcrete South Africa helped to bring this customer facing part of the site into the 21st century while still retaining its historic charm.

No structural changes were allowed to the buildings, but by installing 450 m2 of Flowfresh MF the estate knew that its customers would be presented with a clean and pleasant space to enjoy during their visits.

Thanks to Flowfresh MF’s impervious and seamless finish it is very easy to wash, which helps it keep an unblemished and attractive appearance no matter how busy the cottages get or how much food and drink is spilled on the floor. A combination of Signal Grey and Cream was used for the floors as these colours tied into the natural tones and materials used throughout the cottages.
